The Roger B. Martin Collection
The Roger Martin Collection of landscape images is truly remarkable. Professor Roger Martin founded the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota, serving fifteen years as department chair, and co-founded the Minnesota Society of Landscape Architects, which later became the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Martin served as the president of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 1986-1987. While teaching at the University, he maintained an active professional practice.
The selection of images highlighted in the Image Bank, a small portion of Martin's entire collection, provide special insights into important landscapes of the Twin Cities. Martin has been involved in many major landscape architecture projects in the Twin Cities including the Minnesota Zoo, Minneapolis Park and Parkway System, and Minneapolis Central Waterfront. Many of the images are site photographs taken for use as he and his associates worked on projects; these serve as historical references. Also in the collection are images of project construction and opening celebrations. While most of the images are from the Twin Cities area, a small but interesting portion of the collection includes non-metro locations such as Ironworld Discovery Center, Chisholm, MN; Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver, CO; and Cahokia Mounds State Park, Collinsville, IA.
