Welcome to the web site of the River Life Program:  The Mississippi and U, a multi-collegiate project hosted by the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota. The River Life Program strengthens the connections between the University, the Mississippi River, and the communities and organizations along the river that are working to revitalize their urban riverfronts.

As the largest educational institution on the Mississippi, the University of Minnesota is uniquely situated to model river stewardship activities as well as take a leadership role in river-oriented research, education, and outreach activities. The River Life Program works closely with community partners such as the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service, the St. Paul on the Mississippi Design Center, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the Minnesota Historical Society’s Mill City Museum, and the City of Minneapolis department of Community Planning and Economic Development.

Within the University, the River Life Program is a collaboration between the following programs:  Institute on the Environment, Institute for Advanced Study, Metropolitan Design Center, Urban Studies Program, and the Water Resources Center.

The River Life Program seeks collaborations in which University teaching and research can provide tangible benefits to off-campus partners.  Contact us at pdn@umn.edu for additional information.
